Dementia is a debilitating disease that affects one in ten Americans over the age of 65. One in three seniors will die with Alzheimer’s or dementia, yet this disease is largely overlooked. At the start of this series, I did not realize or expect the emotional effect spending so much time would have on me; the heartbreak of watching a person with dementia try to communicate with their loved ones, or seeing them struggle to remember their own grandchildren’s names. I want these images to convey that these people’s lives and stories are valid and important. I hope that these images shows both the hardships and beauty of life, that we are all humans, and we are all connected.
